What type of license would be required for this trailer?
Licensing is determined by a number of factors. First, examine this flow chart to help determine what license is required based on GVW. In this context, GVW is one part tow vehicle and one part trailer. Therefore, your license is dependent on your tow vehicle as much as it is the trailer you are interested in. Another factor to consider is whether your trailer will be used for commercial or business purposes. If so, you will need a DOT number. Use this flow chart to determine if a DOT number is required. Based on the variances of tow vehicles and trailer options, for a final determination it’s best to contact your local DOT.
Are state inspections required for trailers?
In Pennsylvania, annual state inspection is required for trailers with a GVW over 3000 lbs – There are many items checked for state inspection including tire tread depth, brakes, lights, hubs, breakaway kit, frame, and other body components. Additional maintenance items could include greasable points on doors, cylinders, ramp gates, battery voltage, tongue jacks, roof sealant, and wood decks to name a few. All Pro Trailer Superstore offers yearly state inspection services on trailers that qualify and general safety inspections for units under the GVW requirements for trailers.
