What Is the Warranty Period?
The warranty period is the time in which a manufacturer guarantees to repair or replace their product, which can often differ between manufacturers and products. For trailers, this period can be anywhere from one to five years from the date of purchase and is manufacturer- and model-specific. It is important to understand if your trailer has a complete or limited warranty, as it will affect what items are covered. Most warranties cover defects in material and workmanship.
What Is Warranty Validation?
Warranty validation is the process of ensuring the validity of a warranty, meaning the product still falls within the agreed-upon time from the purchase date. Manufacturers are responsible for this process and can do it by checking the VIN or by looking up the serial number. Attached to every new trailer is also a warranty registration certificate, which you’re legally required to fill out and send to the manufacturer within 10 days. If the form is not completed correctly or sent on time, your warranty is void.
What Isn’t Covered by a Trailer Warranty?
Trailer warranties generally cover defects in materials and workmanship on a trailer’s structural and electrical components. This coverage, however, does not usually protect against wear and tear, accidents, or misuse, and it won’t safeguard your equipment against peeling paint or rust.

How Do I Service My Trailer Under the Warranty?
Work will either occur at the manufacturer’s location or at a qualified repair shop or trailer dealer. All warranty requests must be presented to your authorized dealer and proper arrangements must be made and approved by the trailer manufacturer prior to any work being done. Lack of authorization may result in unpaid claims. Usually, you will receive a warranty approval number that you will use when submitting invoices.
Does Adding a Trailer Hitch Void a Warranty?
Generally, installing a trailer hitch will not void your warranty. The Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1974 prohibits manufacturers from threatening voided warranties due to use of aftermarket components. However, if the manufacturer determines the hitch you installed is the reason for any damage your trailer incurs, they could have grounds to void your warranty.
Is the Extended Warranty on Travel Trailers Worth It?
Extended warranties are optional add-ons that extend the coverage of your trailer. While it is voluntary, an extended warranty might be a good idea when you’re traveling a lot, as it will minimize the risk of costly damage and give you more peace of mind about your budget.
